Roof fans are designed to extract air from buildings. They are especially useful in summer when extracting relatively warm air from under the roof will pull cooler fresh air into the building through other openings in the building.

Vertical roof fans discharge air vertically from the fan, whilst horizontal roof fans, typically using a centrifugal impeller, discharge the air radially. With horizontal roof fans, weatherproofing is easy because they have a cowl cover over the fan and roof opening. Vertical roof fans do have internal covers to protect from rain, and the air discharge is directed around the edge of the cover.
