Hall Of Shame

What's this?…………….. Just some photographs of the old cabin filters that demonstrate the level of dirt that filters remove. Remember these are used standard cabin filters and that replacement Puravent upgrade cabin filters will also remove the nuisance gases that you can't see!

Just a selection of filth that comes out of peoples cars, masquerading as old ventilation filters    Just a selection of filth that comes out of peoples cars, masquerading as old ventilation filters    Just a selection of filth that comes out of peoples cars, masquerading as old ventilation filters

The black staining is mostly due to dust particles less than 10 microns that are generated by traffic and found in very high concentrations above roads with heavy traffic.

The cabin filter on the right is from a car used predominantly in rural traffic, whilst the cabin filter on the left is from a city based car

This is a old cabin filter out of an Audi A4. Notice how the frame has buckled along the top edge. This would have been caused by the fan pulling air against the blocked filter. Dirty air can be sucked round the side of the cabin filter and can re-entrain dust from the dirty side of the filter

And this is what the media looked like when new

And this is what the cabin filter media would have looked like when new!

A cabin filter or not a cabin filter?  That is the question

What may appear to be a cabin filter that is fit for another 5000 miles, is in fact a filter that has done far more than 10000 miles but the very light staining shows that it really does not catch much. The thinness of the media to the extent that it can be seen through raises the question - is it a cabin filter?

It might be reasonable to suppose that this is a cheap replacement filter. But no, this is the cabin filter fitted by the manufacturer!

Sharp Practice

This is a typical example of a car (Peugeot 405) that has previously been fitted with a filter, however it has been taken out presumably by a garage or former owner, as a cheap fix to increase the ventilation. Without a pollen filter in place occupants in this car have absolutely no protection from traffic fumes. Unfortunately this is surprisingly common in many older cars. The lesson; never assume, always check!
